introduction
Energy Voice Institute (EVI) was created to address critical energy issues. Critical issues include public education about the energy industry with an emphasis on balancing both economic and environmental concerns.
Workforce development is also a critical component. Many people that have worked in the electric energy industry for the last thirty years are reaching retirement age and there is a huge gap in the employees that staff the electric utilities in the 25-40 age range. The focus of so many young people seems to be in other industries. The loss of workers is expected to hit hard by 2010. We need to be pro-active in creating a pool of potential employees by spreading information on the rewarding and beneficial job opportunities that are available.
Explore engineering and architecture careers
The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is looking for young women and men ages 15-20 who are interested in exploring careers in engineering and architecture. This program is offered each year and it will run for 6 weeks on Tuesday nights Jan.31-Mar. 6 from 6:30-8:30 pm. They currently have openings for 17 more students. If you or someone you know who would be interested in participating contact Marlene Hyde with Project Time & Cost at 303-940-3200 office or 407-883-0008 cell or by email at marlene.hyde@ptcinc.com
There are many other interesting programs being planned by members of the engineering community. One program is a computer simulation competition between teams to design a bridge that actually supports vehicles going across it. Watch out when it fails! SAME is also having a tour of the VESTAS wind turbine/blade manufacturing facility. Another possible tour is of the National Ice Core Laboratory at DFC. If you have a construction project that you think the students participating in SAME would be able to tour, please also let Marlene Hyde know. Learn more here.
Energy Career Days
The annual Energy Career Days will be held October 4-5, 2011 in conjunction with Colorado Construction Career Days. There will be hands-on activities and equipment to showcase potential jobs in the energy industry especially, electric, natural gas, solar, and wind renewables. Learn more here.
